Bowland Pennine Mountain Rescue Team support the police, ambulance and other statutory emergency services providing search & rescue, medical, flood and swiftwater rescue, technical rope rescue and severe weather support for those in need. This includes treating and rescuing injured or lost hikers and runners on the fells, mountain bikers, climbers, horse riders, as well as searching for vulnerable or high risk missing people. The team is made up entirely of volunteers and who are on call 24/7 to provide support whenever it is needed. They rely entirely on grants and donations to remain operational. This includes purchasing medical equipment and lifesaving drugs, maintaining their vehicles, stretchers and rescue kit as well as ensuring team members are safely equipped to work in any conditions. A number of the 3R team have many years experience in Search & Rescue so we always happy to help our colleagues in the SAR community.
They meet on the first Sunday evening in each month for activities, discussions and to play games. They are involved within the community and had a cake stall for the Coronation Weekend and have undertaken a beach clean up. The church houses the Warton Community Library for adults and the young people wanted to set up a community library for their age group which they will run themselves. They were looking for funding to buy new and good second hand books suitable for 9-14 ages, which would be available to borrow free of charge for anyone from the village. Instead of simply making a grant award for this the 3R grants committee suggested that the group selects books (and book cases) from the 3R charity shop stock over a few months. As the shop sells paperback books for 50p and hardbacks for a £1 it meant the funds went much further and the group received many more books than then would have if they had bought them new. A lovely bit of reciprocal recycling!!
They have 21 schools in their school swimming programme, over 500 children in the lesson programme and hold general swimming sessions, including sessions with links to both doctors surgeries, parent and child classes, aquafit and swim sanity sessions, and also hold children parties on both small floats and a large inflatable. They also have regular bookings from local uniform groups and other youth organisations. So when Gillian the pool manager applied for a grant to replace the end of life battery in their defibrillator we were more than happy to help!
Their Chairperson Cat Yearron explained that the team enables children and adults to participate in wheelchair basketball, promoting the health and well-being of the people who attend, and for some of the participants that attend this is their only accessible sports activity in this area. The team is re-entering the national league this season after a year out and they want to come back stronger, so the 3R Foundation was more than happy to help.
3R stands for 'Reuse, Rehome, Recycle'... and as well as raising funds for local Morecambe, Lancaster and South Lakes clubs, community groups and small charities, we actively promote and engage with any other ways we can 'Reuse, Rehome or Recycle' things that may be discarded.
For example one of our shop volunteers collects all the spectacles that are donated to us so they can be sent to the Lions Clubs International for their 'Recycle For Sight Program'. Millions of people living in low and middle income countries lack access to basic eye care and the Lions have recognized the urgent need for corrective lenses and collect usable glasses. So far we have donated over 200 pairs of glasses to their appeal. So if you have old unused glasses in a drawer you could improve somones life by dropping them off in our shop in Carnforth and we will ensure they are Recycled, Rehomed and Reused!
Activities include flying, gliding, radio/ cyber, first aid, marksmanship training, sports, outward bound (canoeing, climbing etc), Duke of Edinburgh's award, camps and aviation based academic training too. Recent cadet success includes a cadet completing his Private pilots licence, international exchange camps to Germany and USA, and 1 of their cadets becoming the Lancashire Lord Lieutenants cadet representative. The RAF fund most of the core activities (flying, gliding, First Aid Training) at national and regional level, but each squadron is an individual separate charity that is responsible for raising their own funds for equipment and opportunities outside the core syllabus. A grant was applied for as their current IT equipment was out of date, and due to this they no longer received updates from the manufacturer and no longer met the security requirements to be able to log onto the national server to allow cadets to access resources for academic subjects, and for them to take the exams needed to progress through their academic courses. The 3R foundation was delighted to help and provided the funds to allowed them to purchase 4 tablets/ laptops.
Integrated Care Communities (ICCs) exist across the Morecambe Bay area, the ICC are made up of teams of health and care workers, voluntary organisations and wider partners who are working together to improve physical and mental health outcomes, promote wellbeing, reduce health inequalities and focus on wider determinants of health across the population in Morecambe Bay. Carnforth has a small Integrated Care Community; with a Care Coordinator who works with older patients in the local area to ensure that people have access to services and local resources to help make life easier as they age. They seek to reduce hospital admissions, empowering people to discuss and document the things that are important to them and to stay living independently. Each Christmas they seek funding from local groups to enable them to prepare and distribute Christmas hampers to some of the individuals that they have worked with during the year. Carnforth Integrated Care Community have prepared these Christmas Hampers for the last 3 years. Acknowledging the cost-of-living crisis and the need to ensure that the basics are provided first, the team have created hampers with more longevity, focussing on food, drink and other items that will help people to stay warm and well during the Winter.
Preston Curling Club has been going for over 150 years and Alice told us that Wheelchair Curling Club was set up to offer a safe and inclusive space for members of the community who may otherwise face barriers to accessing physical activity. She went on to say that the benefits of sports and physical activity are well-documented, and individuals with disabilities are no exception. However, for many, there are significant barriers to participating in traditional sports programs, including a lack of access to facilities, equipment, and specialized coaching. The Curling club is dedicated to breaking down these barriers, ensuring that every individual can engage in physical activity and experience the many benefits of it. Some of the club participate at international level and the new ultra lightweight sticks make an obvious difference, and what a great venue!
Not dedicated to one art form, and with a belief that the community knows what is relevant to them. Their spaces are currently home to 50 regular groups and a range of cultural and community events. So to be able to support them as they celebrated their 40th Birthday was a honour for us, as the 3R Foundation hasn't even had its first birthday yet!
The group are predominantly 65+ and some members have mobility issues. They struggle to take part in strenuous activities hence the request for the Boccia game. Boccia is a recognised paralympic sport and can be played inside from a seated position, zimmer frame, wheelchair etc. This game is an excellent socialisation activity will encourage collaboration and addresses the members wellbeing and coaxes them out of their social isolation. Sue and Paul from the 3R Foundation went along to officially hand over the grant at last weeks lively weekly morning meeting at The York pub where the bacon buns were very popular considering how fast they were disappearing. All ex services are welcome so go along and say hello!
They told us that they are building a community garden for everyone to use at their head office in Preston. In particular as an outdoor meeting space in the summer for barbeques for the Deaf Clubs as neither Preston or Lancaster have a garden space. They will also use the space for the wider local community with basic gardening courses, wellbeing courses and wreath making at Christmas. They plan to build the raised beds over autumn and winter in time for the growing season in Spring. The 3R grant funding was used to buy garden tools for the volunteers to use to start the project such as wheel barrows, spades, trugs, forks and water butts with the remainder of funds left over going towards purchasing fruit trees for the Community Garden such as apple, cherry and pear.
We have recently established a girls football and rugby team, alongside our boys teams. We are seeking funding to purchase new training tops for our girls team. We attend numerous school football and rugby events not just locally, but across the north west region. We are really proud of our girls team and would love the opportunity to purchase professional training tops. This gives them a sense of pride when they walk out on the field." The 3R Foundation was keen to help and we love our logo on the back of the girl's tops!
So we are always pleased to be able to support local community groups like this and take a bit of financial pressure away whilst helping them maintain a vital service. Find out more at https://www.barecommunityassociation.org
The teams take part in the Junior Premier League across the North West and if qualifying take part in the National finals. The 20 players have been selected locally from Lancaster , Morecambe, Kendal and Galgate.
It is made up of around 40 players who meet regularly to rehearse and perform a wide range of music arranged for flutes including, piccolos, alto, bass and contra bass flutes. The members whose age ranges from 10 to 70+ come from Cumbria, North Lancashire and Yorkshire. They rehearse in Kendal and hold 2 or 3 concerts every year and also perform at a range of outdoor events including Christmas carols in Rydal Cave and Levens Hall. The grant has gone towards the purchase of an upright bass flute that is easier for all ages of muscians to use, as opposed to the alternative, harder to handle, transverse bass flute. We hope that it will help them with their performances for many years to come.
Christiane who contacted us with the application, said that lots of their face masks are now several years old, and they are subject to a lot of wear and tear, so if they have been worn during an injury, or had an impact, then immediate replacement is recommended to ensure the safety and integrity of the mask. We visited them on a very rainy evening at their base at the University of Cumbria, Lancaster. They currently have two Mens and three Ladies teams who train weekly on a Wednesday and play competitively on a Saturday. Plus a thriving junior development programme for children in Years 2 to 11, who train weekly on a Monday and play in age appropriate leagues on a Sunday. They also rely on a strong set of volunteers who coach, umpire and make up our committee, with the ethos of offering hockey as a sport for all. So we were very pleased we could help them play safely.
They offer support, friendship, and help, via weekly zoom meetings and monthly face to face meetings, as well as a monthly newsletter.

They have been running for over 15 years, winning their division fairly regularly. They also hold a Guinness world record for the amount of goals scored in 24 hours, which they achieved during a fundraising event for one of their players during a battle with cancer. They recently increased from 2 teams to 3 teams; Stingwrays, Whipwrays and Mantawrays, so urgently needed new tops which the 3R Foundation was delighted to be able to help with.
Lune valley Swimming Pool offers swimming lessons to all ages, fun extra curricular activities for children such as SplashBall and Rookie Lifeguards as well as exercise classes for adults and the older community.
Silverdale Cricket Club have 2 senior teams competing in the Westmorland league, a ladies team competing in the Westmorland softball league and they also run a summer programme called All Stars and Dynamos for local children.

He was introduced to wheelchair rugby in 2014 during rehabilitation and invited to try out for the Invictus Games being held in London where he came away with the gold medal. Following this, he became part of the GBWR talent development squad and was then selected to join the Paralympics GB inspiration programme for the Rio 2016 Games. He was then invited to GB Elite squad training in November 2016 and became part of the squad who were successful at retaining their European Championship title in 2017 and 2019. His drive and determination to continually improve on and off the court, ensured he was a key part the team during the Tokyo Paralympics, and integral to the teams success when winning the gold medal. In 2023 Stuart was named as the teams vice captain. Stuart who lives in Morecambe is also an ambassador for the RAF Benevolent Fund.
