Skerton Ward Allotment Association

The 3R Foundation recently awarded a grant of £1000 to Skerton Ward Allotment Association to support the replacement of their much-loved but now worn-out poly tunnel.

The allotments provide a safe and welcoming haven for members from across the local community. Many are pensioners who value the chance to relax with like-minded people in a non-challenging environment, while others work in demanding roles within the NHS, Prison Service and Fire Service and appreciate the peace, quiet and satisfaction of cultivating fresh produce. Local youth groups such as Scouts are encouraged to learn more about the natural world, and nearby residents often join in with community activities such as hedge trimming and litter picking.

The poly tunnel plays a vital role, allowing members to raise plants from seed, experiment with new varieties, and provide affordable plants to the wider public through the Association’s popular annual plant sale. These sales are eagerly anticipated by the community, offering plants and advice at prices far lower than garden centres and DIY outlets, while generating revenue to help keep membership fees affordable.

With the support of the 3R Foundation, alongside the Association’s own contribution of £1,267, the new poly tunnel is now ready for the 2025/26 season – ensuring Skerton Allotment Association can continue offering a place of friendship, learning and community spirit for many years to come.

If you know of a local charity, club or community group looking for funding for a project or a vital piece of equipment, the 3R Foundation may be able to help.

We offer small grants to support projects across Lancaster, Morecambe, North Lancs and South Lakes, and applying is quick and easy here:
