Over Kellet Playgroup

The 3R Foundation recently awarded £500 to Over Kellet Playgroup for a large wooden pirate galleon playhouse.

They provide a high standard of care and education for children aged 2 to 4, welcoming families from the village, surrounding areas, and as far afield as Carnforth, Lancaster, and Morecambe. As a registered non-profit charity, they employ a dedicated team of experienced and caring staff. All income - whether from government funding, parental fees, or grants - is reinvested into resources and equipment to benefit the children. They also organise fundraising activities throughout the year to help boost funds, enabling them to offer new experiences and enrich the learning environment for the children in their care.

During the storms in late 2024, one of the playgroup’s outdoor playhouses was badly damaged and had to be removed for the safety of the children. The team wanted to replace it with a large wooden pirate galleon, which would offer greater benefits across several areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework than the previous structure. The pirate galleon supports children’s physical development, communication and language, and personal, social and emotional development (PSED) -the three prime areas of the EYFS as defined by the Department for Education. It encourages social interaction, collaborative role play, and imaginative exploration, all of which help strengthen communication and language skills.

This new galleon is now a valuable addition to the playgroup, complementing and enhancing the existing resources while providing an engaging and creative play environment where children can thrive.
