Lancaster and Morecambe Deaf Children's Society

The 3R Foundation recently awarded £450 to the Lancaster and Morecambe Deaf Children's Society for a collection of board games and card games to support its new youth group.

The Lancaster and Morecambe Deaf Children's Society is the local branch of the National Deaf Children's Society. Each month it brings together children with hearing loss and their families, providing opportunities for young people to build friendships while offering parents support from experienced volunteers, Teachers of the Deaf and British Sign Language interpreters.

The grant funded a carefully selected range of board games and card games designed to encourage communication through both spoken English and British Sign Language. The games are being used to support a new monthly youth group for children from Year 6 onwards, helping them build confidence, strengthen friendships and develop a positive sense of identity as they move into their teenage years.

Many deaf children experience listening fatigue after a day at school through lip reading or signing, so the youth group offers a welcoming, screen-free environment where they can relax, have fun and communicate naturally with their deaf peers. The games include familiar titles as well as specialist deaf awareness games, with some chosen to reflect local places and vocabulary, making the activities even more engaging.

Support Leader Nicola Kay expressed her heartfelt thanks, saying the children were delighted with the new games and resources, which will make a real difference to the group's activities for years to come.

The 3R Foundation funds grants like this through the Recycle, Reuse, Rehome charity shop in Carnforth (next to Tesco).
