Headway Lancaster and Morecambe Bay

The 3R Foundation recently awarded £710 to Headway Lancaster and Morecambe Bay for a social space pergola and plants at their Dorrington Road allotment.

Headway is a voluntary community group supporting brain injury survivors, their families and carers across Lancaster and Morecambe Bay. Many of those they support face loneliness and isolation following hospital discharge, and the group provides a vital network through drop-ins, workshops, advice and wellbeing activities.

A key part of their work is the “Growing with Headway” allotment project, where members can meet, socialise and take part in growing flowers and vegetables. Spending time outdoors plays an important role in improving both physical and mental wellbeing.

The grant funded the installation of a pergola, along with plants and materials to create a dedicated social space within the allotment. Members worked together to plant a range of sensory plants, creating a calm and welcoming environment where they can sit, relax and connect with others.

The idea for the space came directly from members, who said they wanted a place to gather and socialise. The new area has helped further develop the allotment as a place of belonging, offering a peaceful and therapeutic environment for all involved.

The 3R Foundation funds grants like this through the Recycle, Reuse, Rehome charity shop in Carnforth (next to Tesco). With a large number of grant applications coming in recently, continued support from the local community is more important than ever.

Every purchase in the shop helps raise the funds that go straight back out as grants to support local charities, clubs and community groups. If you are nearby, please call in and support the shop so we can continue helping even more organisations across our area.
