Greenfingers Community Project
The 3R Foundation recently awarded £250 to the Greenfingers Community Project for seeds, compost, pots, child-friendly tools, aprons, wheelbarrows and craft supplies.
Greenfingers Community Project Allotments is a volunteer-run community allotment in Heysham, bringing local people together through sustainable growing, learning and outdoor activities. Managed entirely by volunteers, the project provides a welcoming space where people can connect with nature, learn new skills and build community relationships.
The grant supported the launch of the Greenfingers Children’s Gardening Club, a new initiative designed to introduce local children to food growing and the natural environment. Running throughout the growing season, the club gives children the opportunity to plant vegetables and flowers from seed, nurture them as they grow and eventually harvest the results of their efforts.
Funding provided essential resources including seeds, compost, biodegradable pots, gardening tools, aprons and wheelbarrows, along with craft materials to encourage creativity and learning. Children will learn practical gardening skills such as watering, weeding and companion planting, while also exploring nature through drawing, measuring plant growth and observing wildlife.
The project aims to help children understand where food comes from, encourage healthy eating and outdoor activity, and inspire an interest in sustainable living from an early age.
The 3R Foundation funds grants like this through the Recycle, Reuse, Rehome charity shop in Carnforth (next to Tesco).
Every purchase in the shop helps fund grants for local charities, clubs and community groups across North Lancashire and South Cumbria. Please support the shop so we can continue helping even more organisations in our area.
